Court Remands Man Over Alleged Murdering Of Wife

For the alleged murder of his wife, Mariam Awa, a husband was remanded to the Ikoyi Correctional Centre on Monday, December 18.

The crime is said to have been committed on October 24, 2023, in the Lagos State neighbourhood of Igando by 37-year-old Matthew Isaac.

Isaac’s decision to go to his hometown by himself to visit his sick father caused a fight with his wife.

She slumped after he struck her head against a wall during their physical altercation.

When Isaac learned that she had passed away, he called his friend, and the two of them buried her in a shallow grave near their house.

Isaac was brought before Yaba, Lagos State, Magistrate Linda Balogun in a magistrate’s court on a single murder charge.

Chekwube Okeh, the police prosecutor, informed the court that the defendant’s offence violated Section 222 of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Law and was punishable under Section 223 of the same law.

She prayed the court to remand the defendants to the correctional centre pending the outcome of legal advice from the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

The charge read, “That you, Matthew Isaac, on October 24, 2023, around 12.15 am, at No. 15, Governor Road, Igando Oko Filling Station, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill the deceased, one Mariam Awa, by hitting her head on the wall, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
The plea of the defendant was not taken.

The magistrate remanded the defendant to the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the DPP.
